Frankfort, KY – In a momentous occasion, Nakia (Dunn) Day has been inducted into the Kentucky State University Hall of Fame. The ceremony, held on October 4th in the Student Center Ballroom, which will be celebrating her outstanding contributions and achievements in sports, marking a significant milestone in her illustrious career here at Kentucky State University.
Dunn, who began her journey in sports at the tender age of 8, expressed her astonishment and joy upon receiving the news. “I was shocked when I was notified that I met the requirements to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame,” she said. “To know I actually was being inducted felt amazing because I knew my hard work paid off from the time I was 8, which is when I first started playing sports.”
Her journey, however, was not without its challenges. Dunn faced a major setback when she tore her ACL and meniscus, an injury that ended her career a season early. Reflecting on this, she remarked, “It makes you wonder what else I could have accomplished with an extra season if I didn’t tear my ACL and meniscus, because all this was done in 3 years.”
Despite the injury, Dunn’s resilience and determination shone through. She made a remarkable comeback, achieving what she considers her biggest accomplishment. “My biggest accomplishment was being All-SIAC First Team after tearing my ACL and meniscus and being ranked number 7 in Black College Sports after a major injury in just 3 years,” she proudly stated.
Dunn also shared valuable advice for aspiring athletes at Kentucky State University. “Preparation is the key and understanding your purpose overall for sports and college before you even get there,” she advised. “This helped me because I had a goal and was prepared on what was to come transitioning from high school to college.”
Nakia (Dunn) Day’s induction into the Kentucky State University Hall of Fame stands as a testament to her dedication, perseverance, and exceptional talent. Her story is an inspiration, highlighting the power of hard work and resilience in overcoming obstacles and achieving greatness.
