After what seemed to be a step in the right direction for the Kentucky State Men’s Volleyball team last season, the program finds itself back at square one. With a new head coach at the helm and a significantly diminished roster, the team is facing a complete rebuild. Once again, they are grappling with starting over, a cycle that has become all too familiar with the program.
This season, the team will begin with six players, and only four of them are returners. However, not all returners played last year, which adds another layer of complexity to the team’s development. Yet amidst these challenges, the returners are planning to step up and set a foundation for this team.
This year’s roster brings four returners, who each bring their unique skill and talent to the court. Noel Smith, a sophomore middle blocker standing at six feet four inches, expects to anchor the team’s front line with his athleticism and energy. D’Angelo Coleman, another sophomore, is taking on a new challenge as he transitions from outside hitter to setter due to the team’s lack of players. Despite the switch, Coleman’s versatility and adaptability will be crucial to the team’s success this season.
Jamal Gray, a graduate student and experienced libero, returns as the backbone of the defense. Grays’s leadership and experience on the court will provide much-needed stability for the team. In high-pressure situations, Gray can be the voice of reason because he’s seen it all before. Jailen Jones, a junior right-side hitter, finishes out the group of returners. With a strong presence at the net, Jones can be a key offensive weapon for the team this season.
With only six players on the roster, this team will rely heavily on the leadership and determination of these returners as they work to build chemistry and compete against more established programs.
For students who are interested in being a part of this rebuilding effort, the team is looking for interested players. Whether you have experience in the sport or if you’re just curious about it, they encourage students to inquire.
