On January 25th, 2025, the KSU baseball team held their second consecutive First Pitch
Dinner after the windstorm damage that happened in early spring 2023. After their walk off
series win versus Asbury University, a local college here in Kentucky, in a game which
resulted in them winning the game 13–12, after SIAC College Player of the year and former
Thorobred baseball player, Joseph Esparza, the first baseman hit a base–clearing double to
complete the seven–run comeback that day on March 12, 2023. In 2023, this was the first
and only home game they played that season on Alumni Field.

Following the damage caused by the windstorm in early spring 2023, the KSU baseball
team has still not had any city and or state concerns regarding having a safe field to
practice on or even have a field to play on and call home. Guest speaker in attendance to
help pitch and help raise funds, was Doug Flynn, Former Major League Baseball player with
the New York Mets and back–to–back World Series winning Cincinatti Reds (1975–76).
Along with the late greats of the “Big Red Machine”, including Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench,
and Pete Rose. Catering was brought and served by Base Hit Catering, out of Chicago,
Illinois to satisfy all of the guests in attendance.
Current KSU baseball players, senior Jalen Anderson and senior Parker White, also spoke
on behalf of the struggles that the baseball team has been facing since the storm and
sharing their best memories being a Thorobred while being a part of the team a year before
the damage happened. “Baseball for us, is life”, says Mr. Flynn. “Baseball prepares you for
life whether you believe it or not. It teaches you how to deal with failure, success, adversity
when something may not go your way.” As Mr. Flynn closes out with those heartfelt words
of a ball player in sports, head coach Rob Henry announced that the KSU baseball team
managed to raise just about 5,000 dollars, just off the special dinner alone.
