were still settling in. The last thing students needed was fires and fire alarms at all different times of
the day and night.
I interviewed students at Kentucky State University who stay in
“The Halls”, and asked them about their experience thus far this spring semester. One student gave
an explanation of the first fire alarm, stating “It was most likely just someone smoking in their
room, no harm, no foul. This happens pretty consistently and no one can really do anything about
it. It was frustrating because of the time, it was nearly midnight and I was just winding down
because I had class in the morning. Figuring out it was just a false alarm made me realize this
was going to happen a lot.”

When students get used to a fire alarm going off because of other students’ activities it makes them
hesitant to believe there would be something genuinely wrong. Not three days later a fire occurred in
one of the rooms at about 7a.m. Due to the past fire alarm students were hesitant to exit their
rooms and even more hesitant to exit the building. This could lead to serious issues if a student
was to get trapped in their room during one of these incidents.
After the fire department came and solved the issue, students returned to their rooms and not 30
minutes later, another fire had sparked in a nearby room. Students this time understood the
circumstances and quickly exited the building.

I spoke to a R.A about the entire situation and she
stated in an interview “It ended up being a blown heat pipe, It caused the room to fill with crazy
amounts of smoke and even sparked a small fire in the thermostat box. What’s even crazier is this
happened in three different rooms, and god bless all of them were vacant”. With many other

buildings around Kentucky State University getting renovated, situations like this suggest that
“The Halls” should be next on that list.
