FRANKFORT, Ky. – In a recent conversation, Lawrence McConnell, a bright football star at
Kentucky State University, shared his impressive and inspiring journey through his football
career. Here’s a glimpse into his background, aspirations, and what drives him in and outside of
his athletics. McConnell is a native of St. Louis, Missouri. When asked what made him start
playing the game he loved, he stated, “I started playing football when I was about 6 years old,”
McConnell said. “One of my older cousins played football, and I always looked up to him and
wanted to be like him one day. After he passed away, I knew that I had to go 10 times harder just
to finish the things my cousin started on the field.” McConnell finished his sophomore year with
31 solo tackles and 25 assisted tackles, totaling 56 stops also his season-high performance
against Benedict landed him SIAC Defensive Player of the Week Honors. When asked about his
goals and plans for the future, McConnell stated, “My goal is to graduate from college and to
play at a higher level.” When asked about the biggest challenges he had to overcome, he stated,
“One challenge I had to overcome was getting injured last year during a football game. It showed
me that you can’t take anything for granted, you never know when it can be your last time
playing the sport you love.”
