DETROIT — After nearly two decades away, the Detroit Classic returned to Ford Field, and Kentucky State made the most of the moment.
The Thorobreds opened their 2025 season with a 30–24 win over archrival Central State on Aug. 30 in front of a proud alumni crowd eager to see HBCU football back in the Motor City. The event, last held from 2003 to 2007, made its long-awaited return, giving Detroit-area graduates a rare chance to watch their teams compete locally.
Kentucky State trailed 16–10 at halftime but responded with 24 unanswered points in the second half to take control. Quarterbacks Denim Johnson and Torrence Bardell combined for 302 passing yards and three touchdowns, fueling the comeback.
On the defensive side, Lawrence McConnell led the Thorobreds with nine tackles, while Elijah Henderson had a key interception that contributed to the win.
This was more than just a season opener, It was about pride, tradition, and making a statement.
With the victory, Kentucky State not only started its season strong but also sent a message that the team is ready to compete. The return of the Detroit Classic added another layer of meaning to the win by celebrating the history and culture of HBCU football on a major platform and at a major field.
Kentucky State will now return home to host conference opponent Albany State on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. The Thorobreds will be looking for revenge after falling to Albany State 49–21 last season. Their early statement in Detroit suggests they may be up for the challenge.
