FRANKFORT, Ky. — Lawrence McConnell and Torrence Bardell’s inclusion in the 2025 Black College Football Player of the Year Watch List is a major achievement for both athletes and a true testament to the rising talent of Kentucky State University’s football program as a whole.
Torrence Bardell, the quarterback for the Breds, has demonstrated an amazing amount of leadership and skill under center. His ability to read defenses, make accurate throws, and lead his team down the field makes him a very difficult opponent to compete with. Being named to the watch list acknowledges his vital role in the team’s offensive strategy and success, and his chance to become one of the top quarterbacks in the conference. Bardell’s presence on the field elevates the performance of his teammates and inspires confidence within the squad as a whole, while being the leader of the team as the quarterback.
Lawrence McConnell, a defensive back, brings tenacity and skill to the Breds’ defense. As well as being injured in the past and having a major comeback, he was able to lead the Kentucky State University defense last season and was named to the 2025 SIAC Preseason All-Conference First Team. His ability to read plays, make crucial tackles, and intercept passes makes him a game-changer on the defensive end of the field. McConnell’s inclusion in the watch list recognizes his impact in shutting down opponents’ offenses and his potential to become one of the top defensive players in HBCU football with all his accomplishments and accolades. His dedication to the game, his outstanding games last season, and his relentless pursuit of excellence make him a very reliable asset to the Kentucky State football program.
Both athletes’ recognition reflects elite talent within historically Black colleges and universities, celebrating the dedication, skill, and impact these players have on the field across the HBCU football landscape.
