Frankfort, KY- Kentucky State University’s annual Coffee House performance has long been a cherished campus tradition, bringing together students, alumni, and community members for an evening of creativity and connection. Blending spoken words, music, and storytelling, the event showcases the diverse voices of KSU. This year’s performance is set for Nov. 18, 2025, and excitement is already building across campus.
Coffee House has been a tradition for 16 years, creating an eventful night for the members and the viewers. The talent from previous years helps set up the foundation for the Coffee House viewers’ experience now. Coffee House may sound like a club or an org, but this is a student-led performance based on students in a class. This year, thirteen ambitious students have been preparing for this event. Dr. Brogan is the professor who leads the students in the right direction, as well as organizes Coffee House annually.
Students who have attended the show in the past Coffee House performances say the event keeps bringing them back for more, year after year. Current student LaTrae Redrick shared what he is looking forward to this year. “ Something I’m looking forward to, in this year’s coffee house, is the people in it. When you go to the coffeehouse, you don’t expect all those people to be in there, but you see, like, some of your friends up there, you like, dang, I didn’t know you were doing this,” he said. For students like Latrae, it’s about more than just the performance; it’s about the connections, surprises, and memories that keep coming back each year.
Many past coffeehouse members have expressed that the event was a turning point in their creative journey. Former member Jala Anderson explained her favorite memory from coffeehouse, stating, “ My favorite memory of coffeehouse was our intro, doing the dances, teaching the dances, and just having fun.” Moments like these capture the heart of what coffeehouse represents: a space where students can express themselves freely, build confidence, and form meaningful connections. For many, the experience becomes more than a performance: it becomes a community that encourages growth, creativity, and a sense of belonging.
As Kentucky State University prepares for this year’s coffeehouse performance, the excitement shared by past performers, organizers, and returning students shows just how deeply this event is woven into campus culture. Its blend of creativity, community, and tradition continues to make the coffeehouse a highlight of the year, one that students eagerly anticipate and proudly uphold.
