FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky State guard Aziel Blackwell delivered a standout performance Friday night, scoring a career-high 37 points to lead the Thorobreds to a commanding 90–72 victory over Allen University in their home opener. Blackwell’s consistency and composure set the tone throughout the game. He shot an impressive 11-for-18 from the field, and knocked down 4 of his 6 attempts from beyond the arc, and converted 11 of 12 free throws, showcasing his ability to score from all areas of the floor.
Kentucky State also received notable contributions from its frontcourt. One team player powered his way to a dominant 23-point, 14-rebound double-double, controlling the paint on both ends. Another chipped in 12 points on 50 percent shooting, helping balance the offense and giving the Thorobreds multiple reliable scoring options.
The game opened with Kentucky State jumping to a 20–10 lead after a timed three-pointer midway through the first half. However, Allen University had responded, having orchestrated a 12–0 run that changed the momentum and gave them a 22–20 advantage. Allen continued their strong push, extending the lead and entering halftime ahead 39–32.
After the break, Kentucky State regrouped and found their rhythm. Blackwell was very explosive, scoring 28 of his 37 points in the second half. His free throw at the 13:56 mark tied the game at 46–46, setting the stage for a back-and-forth stretch in which the teams traded ties three more times. The turning point came when Kentucky State drained a three-pointer at the 7:01 mark to take a 64–61 lead they would not relinquish.
In the closing minutes, the Thorobreds had a smooth execution and a strong defense and had executed efficiently on offense, which ultimately led them to pulling away to secure an 18-point win and in the end left an encouraging start to their home campaign.
