FRANKFORT, Ky. — Six months after Kentucky State University leaders promised students that campus elevators would finally be repaired, frustration is growing as little progress has been made. What was presented as a quick fix in March has stretched into the fall semester, leaving many students feeling ignored and overlooked. At an SGA town hall in the spring, Dr. Clara Mayberry, vice president of Student Engagement and Campus Life, told students that replacement parts had already been ordered and that the elevators would be operational “by next week.” But as of September, elevators in Young Hall and the New Residence Hall continue to malfunction or remain completely out of service. For junior Aaron Lewis, the delay has shifted from disappointing to exhausting.“It feels like nothing is changing,” he said. “We’ve been hearing ‘next week’ since March, but it’s now September, and the elevators are still broken. There is no sense of urgency at all.” The outages affect students far beyond simple inconvenience. Students living on upper floors, those with mobility challenges, and athletes recovering from injury say the lack of reliable elevator access disrupts their daily routines and, at times, their dignity. Some report waiting 10 minutes or more for the only functioning elevator. Others describe climbing six or seven flights of stairs several times a day just to get to class or return to their room. Staff members say the delays stem from aging equipment and slow shipping of replacement parts. But for many students, those explanations no longer feel good enough. They are calling not only for repairs but also for answers, regular updates, clearer timelines, and accountability being held by the university. As the semester continues, campus conversations are shifting from frustration to urgency. Students want action, not reassurance, and many say it is time for the university to show that their everyday experiences truly matter.
